2021

Graduate school, year two work pictured below. This year, I was messing around with many different artistic methods and mindsets (in the fear of placing myself into a rigid box of being “the girl that draws”). Moved into a phase of abstraction at one point, which morphed into moving away from the representational. In this state of creating, I wanted only two things: 1) to “see what else is out there” and 2) be free of the drawings people were beginning to define me by.

Funny, how that didn’t last.

After becoming unsatisfied with this phase, I moved back into drawing my characters. Other symbols — money, flowers, etc. — began coming in, pulling me back into the artistic instincts I’ve had since childhood. All sorts of materials were experimented with here: paints on canvas, digital media, and alcohol markers.

There’s a lot going on underneath this small paragraph. To say the very least about that… making work during this year of school felt like an exorcism.

We’ll call that a good thing…

Photographing larger than human-sized paintings on canvas when you live in a small space = not easy.
